Buying and Storing Hemp Flour

Buying and Storing Hemp Flour

Hemp flour is more shelf-stable than hemp seed because most of the oil has been pressed out. However, the remaining oils still oxidise, and protein and fibre can develop off-flavours over time. Buying fresh and storing properly extends usable life.

What to look for when buying

  • Best-before date. Aim for at least 12 months out. Hemp flour has a longer shelf life than hemp hearts due to lower oil content.
  • Packaging. Opaque or dark packaging extends shelf life. Resealable bags or jars are preferable.
  • Country of origin. Canadian-grown hemp flour from licensed Canadian producers offers traceability.
  • Certifications. Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, certified gluten-free (for celiac consumers), Regenerative Organic.
  • Grind size. Fine grind for smooth baking applications; coarser grind for rustic breads and crackers. Both are available.

Storage

StorageUnopenedOpened
Pantry (cool, dry, dark)12-18 months3-4 months
Refrigerator18-24 months6-9 months
Freezer2+ years12+ months

For households baking with hemp flour occasionally, pantry storage of unopened bags and refrigerator storage of opened bags is the practical balance. For households baking infrequently, freezer storage of opened bags extends usable life substantially.

How to recognise spoiled hemp flour

Hemp flour spoils slower than hemp seed but does spoil. Signs to watch for:

  • Smell. Fresh hemp flour smells mild and slightly nutty. Off product smells sharp, bitter, or paint-like.
  • Taste. A small sample should taste mild and earthy. Bitterness, sharpness, or a chemical aftertaste indicates oxidation.
  • Clumping or visible mould. Hemp flour should be free-flowing or only lightly clumped. Sticky chunks, discolouration, or visible mould fuzz indicates moisture exposure and contamination.

Spoiled hemp flour will ruin the flavour of baked goods and is not worth using. Compost or discard.
